Hello Real Women of Philadelphia!
Last week we carved out the best techniques, ingredients and tools for cooking those mouth-watering meat and poultry dishes, but now we’re really cranking up the oven: This week is all about baking!
Let’s start by defining the term for those cute little pastries and desserts that are oh so popular at parties and gatherings:

Here's a little back story on these bite-sized delights: There were no gas ovens in France during the early 19th century, so the bread maker’s ovens – which were large stone cabins lit underneath by a fire— were the only types of ovens around.
Because of their size, the ovens were slow to heat up and only had two settings: The grand four, or big oven, where the fire was the strongest to cook meat and vegetables, and the petit four, where the heat was the weakest. This setting was used to bake small pastries and appetizers to be served with tea, and the petit four dessert was born!
No one can pass up a tray full of pretty petit fours, especially if the tray features AMY TONG’S INDULGENCE STRAWBERRY AND LEMON LAYER CAKE!

The RWOP Bakery is open for business, and we want to know:
What’s your favorite bakery confection?
A. Muffins and Scones
B. Éclairs and Cannoli

E. Something else!

My teenage daughter makes the best chocolate chip cookies! She just left for college, so I guess I will have to wait until she comes home for Thanksgiving! -
I really like to make and eat the cakes and cookies. My mother was
the person that could bake the cakes and cookies. -
I just never took the time to learn to bake pastry doughs from scratch. My mother was the purrrfect baker and homemaker and she did try to teach me. I did, however, as a homemaker myself when I had a family, make Fresh From the Oven Dinner Rolls from the PILLSBURY Hot Roll Mix, especially when I cooked and baked for Thanksgiving. It takes a couple of hours for the yeast to do its thing, which mans that it would not ever qalify for this RWoP cooking contest but the results are heavenly! Carol C. - Cee Cee -

I PERSONALLY LOVE CANNOLIS AND NAPOLEANS, I WILL DIE FOR NEWYORK CHEESECAKE. OTHERWISE DESSERT DOESN'T FAZE ME. -
I'm a double-edged baker. I prefer to EAT cookies and cakes, and as much as I love making them, there's something about crafting yeast breads that I absolutely adore. I don't know what it is, but the first time I made bread it was for a competition and I won second! -
As much as I love cookies and cakes, a nice hot homemade croissant will stop me in my tracks!! "C" for me! -

I am one of those no matter how much love I put into my cooking the end product doesn't come out right, though I keep on trying. -

Great job Amy on the Petit Fours. I would have to say other --I love pies, especially fruit pies--I love picking the fruit then taking in the house to bake--pies--breads. I love cheesecake, Creme Brule, and any type of bread puddings. Fall brings the baker in me out in full force. -

Love the Petit Fours, Amy! Beautiful work, as usual. My baked confection favorites include "something else" like Creme Brule and Bread Pudding! I also enjoy a hot loaf of just about any type of sweet bread, but Sweet Potato Bread is one of my favorites. -
Chocolate chip cookies. When I was baking at Thanksgiving for my family, I would make both chocolate chip cookies and bran muffins - the latter of which are soooo healthy! -
So tempting to have one of each everyday at work in our bakery. I am going to have to say Something Else for me. I love the unique Tsrts, Flans, Cheesecakes and Cobblers to bake and present to awaiting mouths and for self indulgence! YUMO! -
I love to make pies...they are simple to make and EVERYONE loves them! There is NOTHING like a HOME MADE PIE to awe a crowd. In the spring, I like to pick apricots off my tree and make LOTS of pies! In the winter, it's lemons off my tree and lemon merengue pie...my mother in law makes the BEST lemon pie, I'm still learning! LOL -
Cakes and cookies! If I'm asked to bring something for a gathering, it will be a dessert. I like to experiment when I'm asked to bring something so I'll try new recipes at that time. There will always be someone in the group that will like it. This way I get votes on whether to keep the recipe or trash it. -
I love to bake cookies, cakes, and breads....all kinds. With the holidays coming up, looks like I will be baking alot of cookies, a few cakes and pies. Also, banana nut bread. YUMMY -
I pick eclairs and cannolis, especially when they're prepared using seasonal flavors, like PUMPKIN and spices!
